Pearl River NY: Archpastoral Visit

Saturday, October 23, 2010

His Grace, Bishop +Michael made his first archpastoral visit to Holy Transfiguration Church, Pearl River NY on October 23, 2010.  The parish rector, Very Reverend Igumen Joseph (Hoffman), with several New Jersey Deanery clergy and parishioners greeted His Grace together in the temple for the celebration of the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy.

A Grand Banquet followed the Divine Liturgy in the parish hall.

In addressing the parishioners, Bishop +Michael remarked that he had never visited Holy Transfiguration Church before, so this was not only his first visit as the diocesan Bishop but also his first visit ever. He encouraged the parishioners to keep vibrant their great treasure and "jewel box" of a temple and to “tell their story” so that their family, friends, co-workers and others might be introduced to the Holy Orthodox Faith; that they, the faithful parishioners, might be instruments of the Holy Gospel and growth of the Church.

Participating in the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy with Bishop +Michael and Igumen Joseph were: Archpriest Joseph Lickwar (Diocesan Chancellor, Rector of Saints Peter and Paul Church, Jersey City NJ); Archpriest Samuel Kedala (New Jersey Deanery Dean, Rector of Holy Spirit Church, Wantage NJ); Archpriest John Nehrebecki (Pastor Emeritus of Christ the Saviour Church, Paramus NJ); Archpriest Joseph Frawley (Orthodox Chaplain to the United States Military Academy at West Point NY); Archpriest Kyril Riggs (Rector of Saint John the Baptist Church, Spring Valley NY); Archpriest Sophrony Royer (Rector of Saint John the Baptist Church, Passaic NJ); and Priest Stephen Evanina (Rector of Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary Church, Clifton NJ); Protodeacon Dimitir Temidis; and, Subdeacons John Paschenko, Alexander Stepanoff and Seraphim Temidis of ROCOR.  Bishop +Michael’s kellenik, Derek Schmidt, also served as a subdeacon along with altar servers Andrei and Marius Anghel of Jersey City NJ and Joseph Kasny and Stephen Popovchak of Holy Transfiguration parish.

The parish choir, under the direction of Tatiana Tjoa, and augmented by singers from the Spirit of Orthodoxy Choir and the Holy Myrrhbearers Women's Choir sang the beautiful responses and several classic compositions of liturgical music.  An ensemble of the Holy Myrrhbearers Women's Choir, under the direction of Eugenia Temidis, performed a concert during the Grand Banquet.
