East Meadow NY
New Program for Seniors

Nearly a dozen senior members of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church (East Meadow NY) gathered for fellowship on Tuesday, 17 January 2012.  They were served a home-cooked meal courtesy the parish’s Sisterhood organization, and spent a couple hours in fellowship playing games. The morning gathering was designed as a way to bring long-time members back together in a very familiar setting.

“Many of these parishioners spent countless hours at past events here,” said Alice Kurtz, a member of the Sisterhood, “We wanted to give them another opportunity to get together here at Holy Trinity.” Based on the positive feedback from those in attendance, the senior get-togethers will occur each month with food and activities.

In February, those in attendance will make pierogi to eat and bring home. In March, the fellowship gathering will take place after a morning Presanctified Liturgy -- since many of the seniors are no longer able to drive at night.

Charles Minchik, a long-time member of Holy Trinity said, “It was great time. We could have these once a week and I would be there.” At the end of the day’s gathering, all of those in attendance received three additional home-cooked meals to bring home. That afternoon, Father Martin (parish rector) and Dennise Kraus personally delivered care packages to other homebound parishioners who weren’t able to join everyone at church. “When we arrived at one parishioner’s home, he was on the phone with a parishioner who had attended,” said Dennise, “and was being told what a great time he had missed.”

The importance of fellowship is at the heart of the Christian experience and the mission of Holy Trinity Church. "It was a wonderful day,” said Father Martin. “So many people pitched in to make it happen and we all enjoyed each other’s company. We’ll find other ways to bring parishioners together again soon."

Founded in 1924, Holy Trinity Orthodox Church is a community of Orthodox Christian people who come from all walks of life, gathering in the oneness of Faith to worship God through daily prayer, weekly services, and annual feasts. The parish also has a strong commitment to serving others -- and particularly those in need, whether in the parish or in the local community.
