WATERVLIET NY
Saint Basil Day Celebration

Saint Basil's Orthodox Church in Watervliet (Maplewood) NY celebrated its feast-day commemoration of Saint Basil the Great on 1 January 2014. Services included an evening Vigil (on the feast-day eve) and, the next morning, a Hierarchal Divine Liturgy celebrated by His Grace, Bishop Michael. The traditional blessing of "Saint Basil’s bread" (Vasilopita) was performed; the bread was then distributed to parishioners in customary fashion at the conclusion of the service, and a luncheon was served at the Saint Basil’s Church Center.

Assisting Bishop Michael in the service were: Archpriest Peter Olsen (parish rector), Sub-Deacon Mark Bohush, Andrew Bohush (Saints Peter & Paul Church, Endicott NY), and Sub-Deacon Marcus (Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God, ROCOR, Albany NY).

Responses to the services were sung by the Saint Basil’s parish choir under the direction of Reader Michael Mellin.
