SYRACUSE, NY – On the weekend of September 20–21, Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church hosted its inaugural Tipp Hill Derby, a two-day celebration of creativity, community, and service — and the response was overwhelming.
Held at Burnet Park, Saturday’s event brought together seven teams of teens and adults who raced custom-built soapbox cars down a thrilling 1,300-foot track filled with twists and turns. Teams were judged not just on speed, but on design creativity, pre-race performances, team spirit, and their ability to conquer an obstacle course. The top prize went to the crowd-favorite "Green-over-Red Traffic Light Car", a nod to Tipp Hill’s famous and quirky traffic signal — the only one in the world with green above red.
Sunday’s festivities continued at the church grounds with professional soapbox rides for kids, a Chicken BBQ, folk music, and old-time games, drawing an even wider swath of neighbors, families, and first-time visitors. Thanks to generous sponsors, meals were provided free of charge, even as the parish successfully raised funds for their food recovery ministry and outreach projects.
The event was a joyful success — and plans are already underway to make the Tipp Hill Derby an annual tradition!
