The Orthodox Christian Church of the Holy Transfiguration in Pearl River NY was the venue for the Holy Mystery of Unction celebrated by His Grace, Bishop Michael, with six priests on Tuesday night, 23 April 2013. In his homily Bishop Michael recounted many of the healings recorded in the Holy Gospel and emphasized: “We are a healing Church and the same authority and gift to heal given by our Lord Jesus Christ to His Holy Apostles is given, also, to the priests of the Church.”
Igumen (Father) Joseph, the parish rector, welcomed Bishop Michael, the gathering of priests, and many Orthodox faithful from across the New Jersey and New York City Deaneries. He invited all to a repast in the parish hall hosted by Boris Maltsev (parish Starosta), and parishioners of Holy Transfiguration. This year marked the sixth anniversary of serving, in its entirety, the Mystery of Holy Unction with seven priests at Holy Transfiguration Church. The parish is celebrating its forty-fifth year of witnessing to the Holy Orthodox Faith in the Lower Hudson Valley.
Concelebrating with Bishop Michael were: Very Reverend Igumen Joseph (Hoffman); Very Reverend Archpriest Samuel Kedala (Dean of the NJ Deanery and rector of Holy Spirit Church, Wantage NJ); Very Reverend Archpriest Kyril Riggs (Saint John the Baptist Church, Spring Valley NY); Archpriest Stephen Evanina (Assumption of the Holy Virgin Church, Clifton NJ); Reverend Priest David Cowan (Holy Trinity Church, Yonkers NY) and Reverend Priest Igor Ksynyuk (Saints Peter and Paul Church, Bayonne NJ). Alexander Vlachos served as Subdeacon.
The responses were sung by the Holy Transfiguration Church Choir joined by guest singers under the expert direction of Tatiana Tjoa. Readers for the service were: Reader Joseph Lawliss (Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Moscow Patriarchate, Manhattan NY); Reader Michael Geeza (Holy Resurrection Church, Wayne NJ); and parishioners Anastasia Maltsev and Marianna Maltsev.
