In recent news you have no doubt read of the massive explosion that devastated the city of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, on August 4 – killing at least 170 people and causing billions of dollars in damage.
The faithful of the Diocese are offered the opportunity to help, via a GoFundMe campaign called Glass for Lebanon, whose goal is purely to help restore the more than 300,000 homes damaged in Beirut that can accommodate window installations. New windows will not bring loved ones back, but they would mean the world to many who are in crisis. Each donation will be tripled by a 100 percent match from both GoX (www.goxapp.com) and Colgate (www.colgate.com).
The nation of Lebanon is home to about 7 million persons, including an estimated Orthodox Christian population of nearly 600,000. Lebanon has been in economic and social turmoil for the past 8 months as the country has descended into poverty, despair and chaos.
We will be using all the funds raised to purchase 6mm Tempered Glass from Saint-Gobain (https://www.saint-gobain.com) , a manufacturer of building and high-performance materials for sustainable constructions, and have the glass shipped to Lebanon as soon as possible.
Funds will be allocated to the following tasks:
- Buy as much 6mm Tempered Glass as possible and have it shipped to Tripoli Port ASAP
- Cut glass to the standard size of each building and have aluminum frames fitted
- Work with local window installers to remodel homes that can accommodate them
Here is some math behind the process. Considering that the average home uses 10 meters of glass:
10 meters of glass ($12) + Shipping ($35) + Cutting/Installation ($100) = $147 per Home
With $50,000 we would be able to help approximately 340 families.
The Go-X Company is helping with outreach/fundraising and working with a local independent NGO, Akkarouna (akkarouna.com), that will help with ground logistics like receiving the shipment, processing the glass, and distributing it accordingly.
This appeal is brought to our attention by the owners of Go-X, who are friends of our Diocesan parish community of St. Gregory the Theologian Church, Wappingers Falls, NY. This project is not intended to compete with the holy work of IOCC or any other worthy charity assisting in Lebanon, but to complement their work.
Many sincere thanks to all who donate! Please remember the suffering people of Lebanon in your prayers!
