Committee on Missions and Evangelism Holds First In-Person Retreat
The Committee on Missions and Evangelism for the Diocese of New York and New Jersey held its first in-person retreat for the mission clergy of the Diocese at St. Gregory the Theologian Orthodox Church in Wappingers Falls, NY on Monday, August 23, 2021. While the CME has been holding quarterly Zoom meetings throughout the last two years, this was an opportunity for the mission clergy to gather together and discuss issues in the mission field as well as a training session for the mission priests. This retreat focused on leadership and management in the mission.

In attendance were His Eminence Archbishop Michael, Mitred Archpriest Joseph Lickwar (Chancellor of the Diocese), Archpriest Eric G. Tosi (Director of the CME) and the mission clergy: Priest Joel Brady from Holy Apostles Mission in Lansing, NY; Priest Paul Fedoroff from St. Olympia Mission in Potsdam, NY; and Priest John Morris from Holy Innocent Mission in Oneonta, NY. Priest Samuel Davis from St. Simon Mission in New Brunswick, NJ joined for part of the meeting.

The retreat opened with a Prayer Service for the Blessing of Every Good Work. The first part of the retreat focused on the challenges and success of the missions and worked on strategy for the upcoming year in the development of the individual missions. In the second half of the meeting, His Eminence spoke to the mission clergy on expectations, addressed issues, and gave guidance for the future work of the missions and the CME. Fr. Joseph shared his experience in leading and managing parishes. Fr. Eric presented an in-depth examination of Christian leadership and management principles, exploring the major traits and skills that the mission clergy must develop in order to successfully grow the mission. He also shared a detailed list on major principles a new priest must work on when entering the mission field.

The CME will continue to meet quarterly by Zoom, and clergy will submit monthly reports for review. There will also be a detailed plan for the Director to visit the missions over the next year. If you are interested in the work of the CME and the work of the individual missions, see the Diocesan website and read the quarterly publication Koinonia posted on the website.
