On Sunday, 28 July, Bishop Michael ordained Demetrios Richards to the Diaconate and Matthew Boncella to the office of Reader during a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at Saints Peter & Paul Church in Herkimer NY. Deacon Demetrios is a 2013 graduate of the Diocese of New York and New Jersey’s Diaconal Formation Program accredited by Saint Tikhon's Theological Seminary. He is attached to the parish in Herkimer.
Concelebrating with His Grace were Archpriest Alexey Karlgut (Dean, New York State Deanery), and the Archpriest John Udics (parish rector). Also serving were Deacon Mark Bohush (Endicott NY) and Deacon Greg White (Holy Trinity Church, Elmira Heights NY).
In his homily, Bishop Michael presented a history of the diaconate and the various ministries deacons have performed through the centuries. He noted that the saints commemorated on July 28th included Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon and Parmenas -- four of the original seven deacons appointed by the Apostles. He encouraged everyone present to apply their talents to the service of the Church.
Following the Liturgy there was a banquet in honor of Deacon Demetrios, Matushka Anastasia, and Reader Matthew.
