Diocesan Christian Education Workshop Highlights New Faith Learning Programs
This year’s Diocesan Christian Education Workshop, “Catechesis: Learning the Faith at all Ages”, was a collaborative effort of our own Diocesan Christian Educators as the Workshop Leaders.
The event was held on Saturday, October 21, with different presenters at three host parishes in each of the three Deaneries, presenting the same material.
Our presenters gave a “taste” of the exciting new offerings from the Department of Christian Education of our own Orthodox Church in America, and from Saint Tikhon’s Monastery, to a total of 50 Diocesan teachers and clergy.
For the New York City Deanery, Ms. Olga Ptach and Mka. Dennise Kraus were presenters. For the New Jersey Deanery, Ms. Chris Wood presented, assisted by Nanette Riabov. For the New York State Deanery, Mrs. Kristy Zaitseva and Dn. David Donch were presenters.
During the workshops they demonstrated how to effectively use the following new programs:
- Essential Orthodox Christian Beliefs: Manual for Adult Instruction
- Blessed is the Kingdom: A Catechism-Based Church School
- Heaven on Earth: A Musical Catechesis for Children
In addition, lessons from The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) were presented. We are thankful to Fr. Stephen Evanina and Holy Resurrection Parish in Wayne, NJ; Fr. Nicholas Garklavs and Saint Nicholas Parish in Whitestone, NY; and Fr. Ambrose Inlow and Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Syracuse, NY for graciously hosting these events.
The sample lessons that were taught at the Diocesan Workshop are available to share. If you could not attend and would like to receive these sample lessons, please contact Matushka Tamara Cowan at tamarancowan@gmail.com.
