The Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection (New York City) is pleased to announce the release of a new CD of liturgical music sung at the divine services in the cathedral throughout the church year. “This is not a virtuosic performance of liturgical masterpieces, but rather a taste of what the divine services as heard and experienced at the cathedral are like,” said the Cathedral Dean, Father Christopher Calin.

The CD consists of 38 tracks sung by both a full choir and a quartet, which takes us through a liturgical day beginning with hymns of Vespers, followed by selections from Matins and ending with appointed hymns from the Divine Liturgy and encompassing Great Lent and the great feasts of Pascha, Christmas, Dormition, and the Cathedral's feast day of Holy Protection.

Orthodox listeners will recognize most of the compositions, and hopefully be transported back to moments of deep prayer during the divine services which sanctify time throughout the church year. This CD is a unique addition to existing parish recordings that are available, and wholly representative of the pan-Orthodox reality typified by many parishes of the Orthodox Church in America. Aside from the Paschal Troparion which is sung in Slavonic, Georgian, Romanian, Finnish and Greek, all hymns are sung in English. There are also some select hymns done in Byzantine chant.

“We are delighted produce this CD and hope that you will agree that it is a joy to listen to, a good evangelism tool and useful in ministry to those unable to attend divine services on a regular basis,” said Father Christopher. The cathedral community is grateful and indebted to Anthony Donovan, a neighbor who encouraged them to consider making this recording, recorded the selections, and edited the CD personally.
