WATERVLIET NY: Helping to Feed the Hungry

On Saturday, 29 December 2018, Orthodox faithful from the New York Capital area gathered at the Regional Food Bank to spend two hours working, sorting, and packaging food that will be distributed to food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and battered women's shelters in the 23 counties of North Eastern New York. The Regional Food Bank serves people and families in distress from Rockland and Putnam Counties up to the Canadian border.

“Over forty volunteers from four different parishes representing three Orthodox jurisdictions made this a truly multi-jurisdictional effort,” said Father Peter Olsen of Saint Basil Church. “There were volunteers from Saint Basil Church (Orthodox Church in America) Watervliet NY; Christ the Savior Church  (Orthodox Church in America) Ballston Lake NY; Nativity of The Mother of God Church (ROCOR) Colonie NY; and Saint George Church (Antiochian) Albany NY. The work day offered all involved an opportunity to work for the benefit of local people in need, as well as meet area Orthodox Christians from other parishes.”
